Health Focus:
Restore and Heal with Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a branch of herbalism that seeks to heal using
plants and their potent aromatic essential oils.  People have been
extracting essential oils from various parts of the plant by means of
steam distillation for hundreds of years.  This method is still used
today.  In this process, plants are steamed over boiling water and
when the water is quickly cooled, the oils float to the top and can be
scooped off.
Aromatherapy’s essential oils help address common ailments,
such as headaches and indigestion; simple burns, bites and stings;
muscular pain, insomnia and nervousness; and depression and
fatigue.  The following ten essential oils have wide applications:
      Relaxing muscles-marjoram and black pepper
      Easing digestion-cardamom and mint
      Stimulating circulation-rosemary and basil
      Aiding in cell repair-lavender
      Helping to transport metabolic waste-grapefruit
      Helping to fight depression-chamomile
      Antifungal-tea tree

Experts suggest avoiding essential oils if you are pregnant or
have serious health issues, but even those in good health should
use them in moderation.  You can test for skin sensitivity by diluting
the essential oil in vegetable oil and testing on the skin in the crook
of your arm or the nape of your neck.  Do not ingest essential oils
and always dilute them before topical application.

When you purchase essential oils, look for products that don’t
contain synthetics.  The label of the product should have the
company name and full contact information.  In the list of essential
oils you should find the common and Latin names of the plants, a
batch number referencing where the plant was grown, when it was
harvested and safety data.

IYNF carries essential oil blends by Oshadhi.  Our HBC staff
recommends “Peace & Quiet” blend.  This mixture is made up of
jasmine, wild chamomile, ylang, ylang and lavender.  It encourages a
sense of peace and calm, and it makes a wonderful blend for skin
care.  It is best used for massage, as body oil, in a bath or in a
diffuser.  You can also find single essential oils from NOW Foods
and Aura Cacia.
